We believe that holistic food should provide all the energy needed to run our bodies and supplies all the nutrients we need to keep our bodies working optimally, but most importantly should always be enjoyable

Food Allergies & Intolerances

“One mans meat can be another mans poison”

In the UK about 1 million people have a food allergy and 10 people die every year from a serious allergic reaction to food.

What is a food allergy?

Allergies are severe immediate immune possibly life threatening reaction (anaphylaxis) to eating a specific food

What is a food intolerance?

Intolerances/ Sensitivities are mild delayed reactions to eating a food. These are rarely life threatening.

Common Food Allergies

  • Nuts
  • Milk /Dairy
  • Shellfish
  • Gluten Cereals (Wheat, Barley, Rye and Oats)
  • Eggs
  • Soya
  • Celery
  • Mustard
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Citrus Fruits

We all need to be aware that foods that can cause severe allergic reactions can turn up in products where you might not expect them.

For example:

  • peanuts or nuts can be used in pesto
  • unrefined nut oils can be used in salad dressings
  • cakes and desserts can contain marzipan or frangipane (both made from almonds) or praline (made from hazelnuts)
  • sauces can contain milk or flour containing gluten
  • cheesecake bases can contain nuts to make them crunchier
  • some Indian dishes can be thickened with ground almonds or peanut flour
  • some Greek and Turkish dishes, such as houmous, can contain tahini (made from sesame seeds)
  • soya flour can be in many food products, such as burgers, sausages, cakes, pastries and biscuits
  • soya is used in some vegetarian products such as vegetarian mince
  • tofu (which is made from soya) is often used in Chinese dishes

Remember that if someone asks you whether a dish contains a certain food, you should never guess the answer. Always check the ingredients carefully and if you can’t find out then say you don’t know.

Common Symptoms

  • Wheezing
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Swelling of the Lips and Throat
  • Runny or blocked nose
  • Sore, red and itchy eyes
  • Coughing
  • Dry, itchy throat or tongue
  • Itchy skin
  • Rash
  • Nausea or feeling bloated
  • Diahorrea and/or vomiting

Healthy Eating – Are your staff “fit for the job”?

At Artizian we all know that good health is an absolute prerequisite for top performance. Good health affects every aspect of a person's life. In fact, employees who are healthy are generally happier and more satisfied.

Remember that the entire human body is made up of molecules derived from food, that means each day what you eat goes to build your future body. What are many of us building our bodies out of ?? Maybe the first time ever we are beginning to realise that you are actually what you eat!!!

The link between what you eat and your health is now even stronger and the evidence suggests that healthier employees tend to have a higher level of satisfaction and lower absenteeism resulting in increased productivity.

At Artizian we aim to provide a Healthy Eating Programme that can provide many benefits for our customers and employees, the most important being healthier, happier lives in and out of work.

By providing a Healthy Eating Programme we help people to understand that by changing what they eat, they could lower their own health risks.

One of the keys to creating and maintaining good health is education and prevention. By providing health and wellness information you give people the knowledge to better their health.

Having a contract caterer who provides the healthy foods and health and wellness information makes the whole process much easier. It can help avoid the vicious circle of stressed staff missing out on key nutrients and burning out.

Let us help you ensure you have a strategy for a cost effective health promotion rather than dealing with the expensive repercussions of illness and fast turnover of staff.

“Look after your staff and they will look after you”.
